The final day of the inaugural US Open Padel Championships delivered a fitting conclusion to a historic event, with champions crowned in the men’s and women’s draws. Hosted at Padel Haus Dumbo, Champions Sunday saw popular American players Brittany Dubins and Carla Rodriguez Sanchez take the women’s title and Juan Manuel “Guga” Vazquez and Jose Carlos Gaspar Campos take the men’s.
Dubins and Rodriguez Sanchez Take the Women’s Title
In a high-quality women’s final, the American pair of Brittany Dubins and Carla Rodriguez Sanchez triumphed over USPA ranked No. 3 Anna Cortiles and USPA ranked No. 6 Luicelena Perez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in a match filled with tight rallies and decisive net play. Cortiles and Perez were ahead four – two in the second set and looking to push the match to a third set. Yet, Dubins and Rodriguez Sanchez held their nerve, winning a golden point in the penultimate seventh game, and then won the next three games in very close circumstances. This win was their second tournament together on the Nox USPA Circuit this year and sets them up for continued success representing the USA at the FIP World Championships later this month. They will now be in the history books as the first-ever women’s US Open Padel Champions.
Vazquez and Gaspar Campos Dominate the Men’s Final
The men’s final was a showcase of padel dominance, with top seeds Juan Manuel “Guga” Vazquez and his partner Jose Carlos Gaspar Campos defeating Nicolas Clerc and Raul Ruiz with a flawless 6-0, 6-2 win. Vazquez and Gaspar Campos left no doubt about their superiority on Championship Sunday and continued their form for the entire week. They dropped only one set on their way to the title and ensured their names would go down in history as the inaugural US Open Champions. This was their third fourth win together on the USPA Circuit, and they will be tough to beat as long as they continue playing together. Despite the final score not showing it, it was a successful week for Clerc and Ruiz, they outperformed their opponents handily in each of their matches leading into the final, and this result will push Ruiz into the top ten of the USPA rankings, and Clerc will sit just outside at No. 11.
A Historic Event for Padel in the U.S.
As the dust settled on the final day of the Championships, the US Open left an undeniable mark on the US padel scene, with spectators, players, and those watching online consistent in their view that the Championships had been a big success and a significant step forward for the growth of padel in the USA. Martin Sweeney, President of the United States Padel Association, reiterated this while looking to the future. “I feel privileged to be part of this padel family on this historic weekend. Padel has an amazing ability to bring people together and bring out the best in us. I want to thank all 170 of the athletes who represented 15 nations; without your commitment and enthusiasm, none of this could happen; thank you for being here, and thank you for making history.
