The fastest-growing racquet sport in the country needs more courts

Padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, and demand for courts is outpacing supply in most major markets. Whether you’re a developer, a club operator, or a first-time facility owner, building a padel court involves decisions like site selection, court standards, manufacturer selection, and permitting, all of which are easy to get wrong without the right guidance.

USA Padel is the national governing body for the sport, recognized by the International Padel Federation (FIP). We don’t build courts ourselves, but we set the standard for what a good one looks like, and we connect facility owners with the resources and manufacturers to build it right the first time.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO PLAN FOR

The build process

Seven steps from empty lot to open court

This is the short version of the process, enough to plan your project and brief your team. The official manual below covers every one of these steps in full technical detail, with diagrams.

1. Site evaluation

Confirm you have the space (a full court footprint runs well beyond the 20m × 10m playing surface once you add run-off and structure), and assess soil conditions, drainage, orientation, and prevailing wind, all of which affect court placement and whether you build indoor or outdoor.

2. Permits & insurance

Local zoning, building permits, and insurance requirements vary by municipality and need to be secured before construction begins. Build this timeline into your project plan early, since it's often the longest phase, not the court installation itself.

3. Choose your manufacturer

Work only with a manufacturer whose courts meet FIP Standards of Play. USA Padel maintains a list of Endorsed Court Manufacturers who meet these standards; see them below.

4. Base construction

The base, typically a concrete or asphalt slab with proper drainage and tolerances, is the foundation everything else depends on. Getting this wrong is the single most common (and expensive) mistake in padel construction.

5. Court kit & structure

Glass panels, mesh, structural framing, and turf are installed to the manufacturer's specification. Indoor and outdoor builds differ meaningfully here, from structural loads to surface selection, and the manual covers it in detail.

6. Lighting & amenities

Lighting standards for competitive play, fencing, seating, and player amenities round out the facility. These decisions affect both player experience and your ability to host sanctioned tournaments.

7. Budget & timeline

Total cost and timeline depend on indoor vs. outdoor, kit vs. custom build, site conditions, and local labor costs. Get quotes from multiple USA Padel Endorsed Manufacturers before committing to a budget.

Common questions about building a court

Answers to what USA Padel hears most often from operators, developers, and first-time club owners. For anything not covered here, our team is happy to talk it through.

Cost varies widely based on indoor vs. outdoor, the manufacturer and materials you choose, site preparation needs, and local labor and permitting costs. The official manual breaks down the cost drivers in detail, and USA Padel Endorsed Manufacturers can provide project-specific quotes.

Timelines depend on permitting, site conditions, and whether you choose a prefabricated court kit or a custom build. Permitting and site prep are typically the longest phases; the physical installation is often the fastest step once materials arrive.

USA Padel recommends working only with manufacturers whose courts meet FIP (International Padel Federation) Standards of Play, and with installers who are licensed, bonded, and insured to work in the USA.

No, USA Padel doesn’t offer direct construction services. We publish the official installation manual with the American Sports Builders Association and maintain a list of Endorsed Court Manufacturers who meet FIP and industry standards.

The Padel Courts: Installation & Maintenance Manual is co-published by USA Padel and the American Sports Builders Association, and is available for purchase directly on the ASBA website.
