USPA 1000 Cooley Open

AGRITELLEY AND CONDE, MORGA AND MARTINEZ CLAIM THE TITLES AT THE USPA 1000 COOLEY OPEN AT PADEL N9NE

The Nox USPA Circuit’s stop at Padel N9NE in San Diego wrapped up Sunday, with Nico Agritelley and Sergio Conde winning the men’s D1 title and Marta Morga Alonso and Renata Martinez taking the women’s. Both draws played out as seeded to the finals; however, both champions faced battles throughout the tournament.

Men’s D1: Agritelley and Conde win their first USPA 1000 title

Agritelley ranked 7th in the USPA Men’s Rankings, and Conde (ranked 10th) came into San Diego as the No. 2 seed, and they delivered on it. The pair moved through the draw to reach the final, where they beat No. 1 seeds Guillermo Jimenez Cagigas and Nicolas Xiviller to claim their first USPA 1000 title together.

For Agritelley, it’s a result that’s been building. He and Conde have been one of the more consistent pairs on the circuit this season, and a USPA 1000 title is a different kind of milestone. At this level, it’s the one that tends to define where a team sits in the conversation.

The semifinal picture was equally clean. All four seeded pairs reached the last four, which doesn’t happen often in a draw this competitive. Jimenez Cagigas and Xiviller were a new partnership heading into the weekend, and reaching the final in their first outing together is a result they’ll build on. The other semifinal went to Agritelley and Conde.

Women’s D1: Morga and Martinez grind through their first USPA 1000 title

The women’s draw had a harder road to the final. Marta Morga Alonso and Renata Martinez came through a difficult first round before finding their form and running all the way to the title, beating top seeds Anna Cortiles and Vivian Carrillo in the finals.

Morga came into San Diego ranked 5th in the USPA Women’s Rankings and had reached the runner-up spot at the RGV USPA 1000 earlier in the season, losing to Cortiles and Luicelena Perez. Here, the tides have turned, with a different partner across the net; she and Martinez (ranked 11th) got the result they were looking for.

Martinez has had a strong season at the 1000 level. She and Morga have played together several times this year, and Sunday showed what the partnership can produce when they’re playing their best.

Celeste Paz and Mariluz Rojo Domingo were worth watching in the earlier rounds, with Paz’s experience at the international level showing throughout their first match. They were leading in the third set against the eventua champions before losing 7-5 in that final set.
