From August 24-30, the Cupra FIP Tour rolls into South Texas as RGV Padel Club in Mission plays host to FIP Silver McAllen, Texas. Coming just a day after the dust settles on the USA Padel 1000 at The Sports Haus, the tournament gives American players another chance to chase FIP World Ranking points against an international field, on the heels of one of the most eventful weekends the USA Padel Circuit has seen all year.
A Loaded Men’s Field Headlined by International Firepower
The men’s main draw is topped by the pairing of Antonio Fernandez (ESP) and Leonel Daniel Aguirre (ARG), better known as “Tolito”, the top seed entering the week. It’s the kind of seed that sets the tone for a 32-team draw that runs deep with quality from Spain, Argentina, and beyond.
But the American storylines are what will have USA Padel fans tuning in.
Vinny Di Francesco enters as the seed’s most recognizable American name, teaming again with Argentina’s Ivo Andenmatten in the eight seed. The pair won the USA Padel 1000 at RGV together back in April, their second team title on the USA Padel circuit.
The Andenmatten-Di Francesco pairing carried that momentum into the FIP Cupra Tour, reaching the round of 16 at the recently finished FIP Gold San Luis.
That successor’s chief challengers, Nico Agritelley and Sergio Conde, are also in the McAllen draw, arriving off the back of one of the year’s most talked-about matches. The pair pushed Baltazar Parra Heck and Juampi Andrada to the brink in the USA Padel 2000 final in Brooklyn before falling in a heartbreaker, and now they turn around for another international test in Texas. With a run of USA Padel Circuit stops still ahead this year, this week is as much about continuing to build momentum as it is chasing ranking points.
None of the American entries has it easy on paper. The two seeds, Diego Arredondo García (MEX) and Agustín Torre (ARG), and the three seeds of Borja Trujillo Chang (ESP) and Miguel Morales (ESP), round out a top of the draw that offers no easy path through for anyone hoping to make a deep run. Perhaps a good story of the bunch belongs to Santiago Castro Varela, who earned a wild card into the main draw just weeks after helping the US Junior National Team to a best-ever showing at the Pan American Junior Circuit III in Veracruz. It’s a rapid rise for the young American, and a chance to test himself against seasoned professionals well outside his age bracket.
Women’s Draw Brings Together Six Nations and a Familiar American Partnership
The women’s field is every bit as international, with the top seed going to the Spanish pairing of Carla Fernandez Gonzalez and Nerea Guerra Santana.
The headline American storyline, though, belongs to the second seed. Brittany Dubins and Camila Ramme Coellar reunite for the week off the back of a breakout year together on the international stage. Having already claimed three Cupra FIP Tour titles this season at FIP Bronze Hamburg, FIP Bronze Miami, and FIP Silver Palermo. Dubins arrives chasing her fifth Cupra FIP title of the year, her fourth with Ramme Coellar, after also winning FIP Bronze La Nucía alongside Anna Cortiles, the USA Padel Circuit’s #1-ranked player. Factor in their back-to-back USA Padel 2000 titles domestically in Austin and Brooklyn, Dubins and Ramme Coellar arrive in Texas as one of the hottest pairs in the sport right now.
Rounding out the top of the draw, Ainize Santamaria Landa and Aitana Garcia Roman come in seeded third, with Lucia Perez Parra and Clarinha Santos seeded fourth. Also featured in the main draw are American wild cards Paula Castro and Laura Higueras, who will look to make the most of their opportunity against seasoned professional competition.
A Statement Week for American Padel
FIP Silver events like this one are where American players continue to close the gap with the international game, week over week, tournament over tournament. Every point earned in McAllen counts toward the FIP World Rankings, and every round played against unfamiliar international opponents is a data point in just how far USA padel has come.
