The glass courts of Urban Padel witnessed one of the most dramatic tournaments in USPA history this past weekend, as unseeded pair Daniel Diaz and Jose David Sanchez Serrano blazed through a stacked Men’s D1 field to claim an unexpected championship victory.

Men’s D1: The Ultimate Upset Story

In a tournament that saw top seeds topple like dominoes, Diaz and Sanchez Serrano announced their arrival with authority, dismantling fourth-seeded Sergio Conde and Guillermo Jimenez Cagigas 6-0, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, a scoreline that sent shockwaves through the draw.

The quarterfinals also saw Pablo Ibanez Fernandez and Alberto Ibanez Fernandez upset third-seeded Maximiliano Rozas and Nico Agritelley, while top-seeded Vinny Di Francesco and Juan Manuel Vazquez survived a tough test against Raul Ruiz and Chris Humphreys, winning 6-3, 7-6. Luis Estrada and Jacobo Blanco de Miguel rounded out the final four with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Radu Ionescu and Daniel Fernandez.

But the real defining moment came in the semifinals, where Diaz and Sanchez Serrano faced their ultimate test against top-seeded favorites Di Francesco and Vazquez. In a match that had spectators on their feet, the unseeded pair edged out the tournament favorites 6-4, 7-6, proving their quarterfinal demolition showed they belonged.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Estrada and Blanco de Miguel dispatched the Ibanez Fernandez brothers 6-3, 6-2 to set up a blockbuster final.

In the championship match, momentum proved unstoppable. Diaz and Sanchez Serrano finished strong, taking the title 6-4, 6-2 against Estrada and Blanco de Miguel and cementing one of the greatest upset victories in USPA tournament history.

Women’s D1: Cortiles and Perez Survive Marathon Battle

On the women’s side, Anna Cortiles and Luicelena Perez proved that champions are forged in adversity. The tournament began with a competitive quarterfinal round that set the stage for dramatic semifinals.

In the quarterfinals, Cortiles and Perez defeated Dhany Quevedo and Andrea Samson 6-2, 6-3, while Brittany Dubins and Marta Morga Alonso delivered a dominant 6-0, 6-1 performance against Erika Castillo and Vivian Carrillo. Julie Razafindranaly and Maria Magraner advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Camila Puente and Camila Barni.

The semifinals brought the drama. Cortiles and Perez’s clash against Dubins and Morga Alonso became an instant classic, a grueling three-set war that saw Cortiles and Perez prevail 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 in what many are calling the match of the tournament. Meanwhile, Petrauskaite and Lujan defeated Razafindranaly and Magraner 6-3, 6-3 to punch their ticket to the finals.

Having survived their tough semifinal, the battle-tested Cortiles and Perez found their rhythm in the finals, dispatching Petrauskaite and Lujan 6-1, 6-2 to claim victory.
